The Botshabelo Mission Station in Middelburg has been a historical anchor for the community of Middelburg since 1865. From being a place of refuge, a school, and a world-renowned tourist attraction that received four international tour buses a day, to nothing.
Middelburg used to be the second-most-popular tourist destination in Mpumalanga. It was the favourite stop for international tours from OR Tambo Airport en route to Kruger National Park. Tourists visited the museum, bought crafts from local crafters, camped near the river, or hosted a wedding. Botshabelo was the place to go. It was the go-to place for activities for the local community. Without the visitors, business dried up for everyone. Tourism has lost its community anchor.
One council decision eliminated a significant tourist destination. In the early 2000s, numerous investments were made in tourist accommodation and lodges along the N11 leading to Loskop Dam. We have all seen some of our favourite lodges close. If no new visitors enter our area, business dries up.
Without another tourism attraction that includes the community and offers variety, our tourism is facing a difficult time. Business tourism is our saving grace, but it serves the business community, not tourists.
The future of tourism is in the hands of the Steve Tshwete Municipality. Their decisions will shape how tourism grows and prospers by creating an enabling environment.
