Since the extended period of loadshedding during 2022, MCCI lobbied that STLM manage the Middelburg’s loadshedding schedule in the same manner as in 2009 when the loadshedding started. The delay in the full implementation is putting our businesses at risk and MCCI’s members requested that the STLM manages our electricity supply from Eskom equitably. If other towns such as eMalahleni and Mbombela can do it, why not Middelburg?
The SCADA process has been dragging its feet since March 2023 when MCCI submitted a request to the STLM Council for a SCADA system for our town. There were several meetings since the January 2023 meeting between STLM and MCCI members. Many promises were made and broken, deadlines moved. At some point there were a breakdown in communications that further delay in finalising the project. Some of the issues identified previously was that the contractor would be held liable for full implementation by November 2024, otherwise penalties would be charged. It seems that with the change in management the deadline for implementation was moved.
MCCI met with the contractor, subcontractor, Electrical Department and the MEC for Cooperative Governance, MEC Speedy Mashilo on Monday on 24 February 2025. The subcontractor confirmed that the ICT department of STLM worked well and the previous issues that delayed the process has been resolved. They promised that they will have the SCADA system installed by the end of March 2025, and will be live in April. If everything goes well the system should be fully operational before the end of May.
Members highlighted the importance of an electrical infrastructure where new developments should be added to the grid without delay, without compromising existing businesses. The members again stressed the importance of load curtailment and asked STLM to discuss this matter with Eskom again. MCCI members do not want to be exposed. One of the main drivers for economic growth and job creation is a stable and reliable electricity supply. Members plans can be scuttled if this is not finalised soon.
